i didn’t buy the purple starry sock yarn – carri did.  she needed it because it matches the sweater she is going to knit for herself – same company, same color, just thinner yarn.  i’m really glad she got it.

today i heard a story that made my heart sad.  one of our block of the month ladies started a new job.  she is working in a hospital with mom’s and their babies.  last night a mom delivered a 15 week baby.  there was nothing small enough to wrap the little one in so mom and dad could say good bye.  this knitter asked if anyone would be interested in knitting up hats – miniature hats – and ten inch square blankies for these most precious of tiny ones.  the response around the table was immediate.  i started on a prototype for the hat and blankie right away.  here is the pattern we came up with:

hat:  using dk weight yarn and size 3 double-pointed needles, cast on 24 sts, 8 on each of three needles.  knit a 1×1 rib for 8 rounds.  round 9:  k2, k2tog around.  round 10:  k1, k2tog around.  round 11:  k2tog around.  round 12: k2 tog around (3 sts).  break yarn and thread through all sts,  weave in ends.

blankie:  using dk weight yarn and size 4 needles, cast on 4 sts and knit 2 rows.  every row after that, k2, yo, knit to the end of the row.  continue in this manner until there are a total of 65 sts on the needle.  begin decreasing by k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, knit to the end of the row.  repeat until there are only 4 sts left.  knit one row even.  bind off and weave in ends.

if any of you care to join in this project please let me know.  we will be collecting any and all baby sets at the shop and pass them on to the appropriate people.  if your knitting results in a bigger hat or blankie, remember that babies come in all sizes – even five inches long.  thank you in advance for your help.  we knitters can make a difference!
